An analysis of the Movie "THE KNOWING"

I know this hub is a little diffrent from the others that I've written, but I saw the movie "THE KNOWING", this last weekend and it really got me thinking.

There are many theories as to how the end of the world will happen. Most Christians believe that the end of the world comes when Christ returns to Earth to collect his true devoted followers leaving all other to thier doom. Others believe that there is going to be a second Iceage where many humans will die, due to the irreversible effects of global warming. Another belief is an asteroid collision or a mega tsunami, the explosion of the sun, a collision with a parallel universe and a gamma ray burst [A type of colossal cosmic explosion could wipe out most forms of life on Earth. At least some of them are believed to occur when massive stars collapse and form black holes. They produce two cone-shaped beams of radiation from each pole that could fry life on nearby locations.]

The movie KNOWING concentrates on what I believe to be the Maya prediction for the end of the world in 2012. In a nutshell this prophecy foresees a sunflare igniting the planets ozone layer, hence killing most if not all of life in our planet. It is a possibility that this one day might happen. Although I prefer not to believe them, I do give the Mayan credit, after all they were a very advanced culture for their time and it is said that they even predicted the end of their civilization.

What really got me thinking about the movie, is how the chosen ones were chosen. No matter which religion or ideal you believe in, all agree that a cleansing of our earth will come and that life will go on through a select elite group.

In the movie those few selected people were empathic, pure hearted, loving, innocent, and especially good towards their own and the planet. Even though many will argue that it is only a fictional scenario, that nothing like it will ever happen. The reality is that we never know. The future is uncertain, the past isn't.

That is why many great men said that in order to have a prosperous future, we must look into the past and learn from our mistakes or else we will be doomed to repeat it; and I dare to ask... HAVE WE LEARNED FROM OUR MISTAKES????

My personal opinion is that we haven't. All through out history we have seen humanity fall, once again become humble and appreciate everythingaround us. But as time passes by we forget what once brought us down to our knees and again think we are god-like. Deciding what we want and taking what we need no matter what. I admire the human race, we have the ability to think and adapt our selves to what ever situation or environment we are in. But I must admit that we have done more harm than good.

We humans have invaded all other species home, but if they reclaim their territory we come at them with fury, by killing them, arguing that they were a threat to us. But are they, really? Or are we the threat? It is my personal belief that we were placed in this earth to protect it; not to dominate it.

We have been living in this beautiful planet for longer than scientist can tell for certain. Through out time we have survived, without Internet, cellphones, money, cars, streets, sidewalks, supermarkets and more. How did they do it back then???? By working with the environment, not against it. Using all the resources they available to the max, without depleting them to a point where they ran out.

In conclusion the key is balance and that is what we have lost, and that is what will take humanity to its doom. Whether you are a christian, buddha, islam, muslim, jew, whatever, this in an undeniably fact. We are our greatest threat and only those who can see it and make a real change to work with the planet not against it are the ones who will survive and move on.

hey man, i'm with ya on some of this.. especially the first part, bout the Knowing. to be straight-up on things, i'm a follower of Jesus Christ, so i do have beliefs and views on some of these topics you discussed; as do you and others ofcourse. yet, either way i guess i'm not trying to prove right or wrong, but just sharing the movie from my perspective.

to make a long story short, i just-happened to see it Dec15th last yr(2010), completely out of the blue. didn't really have any idea what it was about or anything. so, i started watching it, and it was speaking volumes! i know the movie isn't exactly scriptural (accoring to the Bible) by any means, but it is SO deep! there are so many parallel's and allusions to a biblical perspective on things that it's not even funny.

it'd actually take a while to spell it all out as far as what all is in the movie, but perhaps another time or maybe in an email.

as far as your article goes, i've got a few comments.

1)how Christianity/Christ said the end of the world will (so-to-speak) come is, that Christ himself will come (not on the ground/earth yet but "on the clouds", just as he left) as He has promised to deliver His followers who have accepted/received Him and have been spiritually reborn, from the just wrath/judgement that is to come upon the earth - just as the chosen ones in TheKnowing were delivered. This is known as the Rapture.

following the rapture will be the 7 year tribulation period, a time of chaos and devastation like never before. and then Christ will actually return to the earth at the end of the 7 year period, and eventually the earth will be renovated by fire, so-to-speak, ("the elements will melt away with a fervent heat.")

then comes the time to "start over"; "a new heavens and a new earth". a time when things will be as they originally were; no fallen man, no sin, no murder, no evil, no death, no night, no sleep, no end.

2)i don't believe the movie centers exactly on the mayan prediction of the end of the world - though the documentary with the movie comments on that among other things. there's WAY TOO MUCH allusion to Christianity for that to be the case: the songs the kids sing, Ezekiel's Vision(x2), the Whisper People, the black rock, the orb that descends from the sky, Cage's father/a preacher & sister/family, the boy:deaf/hear, and so much more.

of course, not saying the 2012 hype had nothing to do with the idea for creating the movie, but as far as the movie itself is concerned i see no connection between it and the Mayan prediction.

3)How the chosen were chosen: i tend to sortof disagree. unlike other religions, the way Christ's current kingdom, salvation, and being chosen work is unlike other religions. it's not the morally, physically, or spiritually elite that are chosen. not the best/the cream of the crop, the morally excellent.

it's the unworthy - the sinners. those who reckognize the horror and trajedy of man's and their own personal brokennes, corruption, and fall&sin and our/their desperate need for a Savior to come and make things right - to restore us to the life and eternity we're meant to live. those who with Child-like faith respond to God's loving offer through His Son whom He sent to purchase our redemption.

it's those who are chosen; "who heard the call" and accepted. THEN, when one comes to know Jesus as their savior, they are able to live an 'elite' life by God's Spirit and enablement, who lives within - not according to the abilities/strength of their own sinful, fallen nature. in other words, we're elite because we're chosen and enabled; not chosen becausae we're elite.

4)the future is uncertain - as far as our limited knowledge and understanding is concerned. BUT, the future IS certain as far as God has revealed, so reliably and accurately in His Word. the Bible is the one book that DARES to predict the future FAR in advance to such an accurate degree, yet plainly and undeniably fulfills itself. after all, the one who made these prophecies is still alive, ensuring the fulfillment of his Word, without fail.

5)no, unfortunately we don't tend to learn from the past or our mistakes. we continue to fall in the same traps and cycles all over again. history repeats itself.

the saying is, that "history is circular." it is indeed, just as a person makes several laps around a track in a relay (track & field, nascar, ...). or just as the sun rises and sets in a day just for it to repeat the next.

BUT history is also LINEAR. you may run a race in which you run 4 laps around a track, but there IS a Finish Line. there is a LAST lap. just as you have many days in your life that you start afresh, there is an END.

history is the same.

and if you pay attention, it's just the end of one thing/phase, and the beginning of another. the day IS coming when history/life as we know it will no longer be the same; when this age will be over; when life will eventually be restored to what it was meant to be; when everything will start over.

6)Finally, another comment about the mayan connection. i do believe that Signs of the Times are all around us. i do believe with much confidence and certainty that we are on the verge of pivotal moment in history and prophecy fulfillment; i do believe we are on the verge of the end-times: the tribulation, rapture, the 4-horsemen,...

but not because of the Mayan Prediction, 'The Knowing', '2012', or other hype - though, i do believe that among the other signs/warnings, these movies do serve as a warning and wake-up call. but because of the signs and many other things that are culminating that my Father has opened my eyes to see.

7)Yes, we are our own greatest threat and worst enemy more than you know.

and i agree, we should do better to preserve life here and do better with our resources; but personally, i can't keep myself from dying, but my concern isn't just life here/preserving but i intend on living past this life here - i intend on New/Restored life and knowing my creator even more than i do now.

take care and perhaps i can share more later.
